Despair Is Seated On A Bench
by Jacques Prévert (tr. Lawrence Ferlinghetti)

In a square on a bench
There's a man who calls you when you pass
He has eyeglasses and old grey clothes
He smokes a little cigarillo
He is seated
And he calls you when you pass
Or simply makes you a sign
Don't look at him
Don't listen to him
Pass by
Make as if you didn't see him
As if you didn't hear him
Pass by hurry past
If you look at him
If you listen to him
He makes you a sign and nothing nobody
Can stop you from going to sit near him
So then he looks at you and smiles
And you suffer atrociously
And the man continues to smile
And you smile the same smile
Exactly
The more you smile the more you suffer
Atrociously
The more you suffer the more you smile
Irremediably
And you stay there
Seated fixed
Smiling on the bench
Children play near you
Passersby pass
Tranquilly
Birds fly off
Leaving one tree for another
And you stay there
On the bench
And you know you know
You never again will play
Like these children
You know you never again will pass
Tranquilly
Like these passersby
Never again fly
Leaving one tree for another
Likes these birds.

The flower shop

A man enters a flower shop
and decides on some flowers
the florist wraps them up
as the man puts his hand into his pocket
to find the money,
the money to pay for the flowers
but at the same time
suddenly
he places a hand over his heart
and falls
As he falls
the money rolls around on the floor
and the flowers fall
with the man
with the money
and the florist stands there
as the money rolls
as the flowers ruin
as the man dies
it's obviously all very sad
and she really should do something
this florist
but she doesn't know how to go about it
she doesn't know
where to start
There are so many things to do
for this dying man
these ruining flowers
and this money
this rolling money
that won't stop

images

dejeunerdumatin

Breakfast

He poured the coffee
Into the cup
He put the milk
Into the cup of coffee
He put the sugar
Into the coffee with milk
With a small spoon
He churned
He drank the coffee
And he put down the cup
Without any word to me
He emptied the coffee with milk
And he put down the cup
Without any word to me
He lighted
One cigarette
He made circles
With the smoke
He shook off the ash
Into the ashtray
Without any word to me
Without any look at me
He got up
He put on
A hat on his head
He put on
A raincoat
Because it was raining
And he left
Into the rain
Without any word to me
Without any look at me
And I buried
My face in my hands
And I cried

Jailer’s Song

Where are you going handsome jailer
With that key covered in blood
I am going to release the one that I love
If there is still time
And who I locked up
Tenderly cruelly
At the greatest secret of my desire
At the height of my torment
In the lies of the future
In the stupidity of vows
I am going to release her
I want her to be free
And also to forget me
And also to leave me
And also to come back
And to love me again
Or to love another
If another pleases her
And if I stay here alone
And she leaves
I will only keep
I will always keep
In the hollows of my two hands
Until the end of days
The softness of her breasts sculpted by love.

Song of the snails on their way to a funeral

Two snails were going to the funeral of a dead leaf.
Their shells were shrouded in black,
and they had wrapped crepe around their horns.
They set out in the evening,
one glorious autumn evening.
Alas, when they arrived
it was already spring.
The leaves who once were dead
had all sprung to life again.
The two snails were very disappointed.
But then the sun, the sun said to them,
"Take the time to sit awhile.
Take a glass of beer
if your heart tells you to.
Take, if you like, the bus to Paris.
It leaves this evening.
You'll see the sights.
But don't use up your time with mourning.
I tell you, it darkens the white of your eye
and makes you ugly.
Stories of coffins aren't very pretty.
Take back your colours,
the colours of life."
Then all the animals,
the trees and the plants
began to sing at the tops of their lungs.
It was the true and living song,
the song of summer.
And they all began to drink
and to clink their glasses.
It was a glorious evening,
a glorious summer evening,
and the two snails went back home.
They were moved,
and very happy.
They had had a lot to drink
and they staggered a little bit,
but the moon in the sky watched over them.

Quicksand

Deamons and marvels
Winds and tides

Far away already, the sea has ebbed
And you
Like seaweed slowly caressed by the wind
In the sands of the bed you stir, dreaming

Deamons and marvels
Winds and tides

Far away already, the sea has ebbed
But in your half-opened eyes
Two small waves have remained

Deamons and marvels
Winds and tides

Two small waves to drown me

”

Prevert (1)

Jacques Prévert - Quartier Libre

I put my cap in the cage
and went out with the bird on my head
So
one no longer salutes
asked the commanding officer
No
one no longer salutes
replied the bird
Ah good
excuse me I thought one saluted
said the commaning officer
You are fully excused everybody makes mistakes
said the bird.

F14479link to image

THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER LOVES BIRDS TOO MUCH
Birds in their thousands fly toward the lights
in the thousands they fall in their thousands they crash
in their thousands blinded in their thousands stunned
in their thousands they die
The lighthouse keeper can’t stand that kind of thing
he loves birds too much
so he says Dammit! That does it!
And he turns off everything
In the distance a cargo ship is wrecked
a cargo ship coming from the tropics
a cargo ship loaded with birds
thousands of birds from the tropics
thousands of drowned birds.

Et tu marchais souriante
Epanouie ravie ruisselante
Sous la pluie
Rappelle-toi Barbara
Il pleuvait sans cesse sur Brest
Et je t'ai croisée rue de Siam
Tu souriais
Et moi je souriais de même
Rappelle-toi Barbara
Toi que je ne connaissais pas
Toi qui ne me connaissais pas
Rappelle-toi
Rappelle-toi quand meme ce jour-là
N'oublie pas
Un homme sous un porche s'abritait
Et il a crié ton nom
Barbara

- Barbara -

Remember Barbara
It rained incessantly on Brest that day
And you walked smiling
Flushed enraptured streaming
in the rain
Remember Barbara
It rained incessantly on Brest
And I've cross rue de Siam
You were smiling
And I smiled to Similarly
Remember Barbara
You whom I did not know
you who do not know me
Remember
Remember though day
Do not forget
A man was hiding under a porch
And he cried your name
Barbara
And you ran to him in the rain
Dripping delighted blossomed
And you threw yourself in his arms
Remember that Barbara
And do not blame me if I tu
I told you to everyone I love
Even if I did seen only once
I told you to all those who love
Even if I do not know them
Remember Barbara
Do not forget
this wise and happy rain
On your happy face
On that happy town
That rain on the sea
On arsenal
on the boat Ouessant
Oh Barbara
What bullshit war
What are you now become
Under this iron rain
Of fire steel Blood
And whoever you hugged
Lovingly
Is he dead or missing alive
Oh Barbara
It rains incessantly on Brest
As it was raining before
But this is not the same and everything is damaged
it is a rain of mourning terrible and desolate
This is not even the storm
Of iron steel blood
clouds Just
Who dying like dogs
Dogs that disappear
In the course of the water on Brest
And will rot away
in the distance far from Brest
which nothing remains.

ParisatNight

Paris At Night

Three matches one by one

Three matches one by one struck in the night
The first to see your face in its entirety
The second to see your eyes
The last to see your mouth
And the darkness all around to remind me of all these
As I hold you in my arms.

ce in its entirety
The second to see your eyes
The last to see your mouth
And the darkness all around to remind me of all these
As I hold you in my arms.

The Dunce

He says no with his head
but he says yes with his heart
he says yes to what he likes
he says no to his teacher
he stands
is questioned
and all the problems are posed
suddenly crazy laughter takes him
and he erases it all
the numbers and the words
the dates and the nouns
the sentences and the traps
and despite the master's threats
under the jeers of the prodigy children
with chalk of every color
on the blackboard of misery
he draws the face of joy

wp-d7k_0049-edit

To paint a bird's portrait

First of all, paint a cage
with an opened little door
then paint something attractive
something simple
something beautiful
something of benefit for the bird
Put the picture on a tree
in a garden
in a wood
or in a forest
hide yourself behind the tree
silent
immovable...
Sometimes the bird arrives quickly
but sometimes it takes years
Don't be discouraged
wait
wait for years if necessary
the rapidity or the slowness of the arrival
doesn't have any relationship
with the result of the picture

When the bird comes
if it comes
keep the deepest silence
wait until the bird enters the cage
and when entered in
Close the door softly with the brush
then remove one by the one all the bars
care not to touch any feather of the bird
Then draw the portrait of the tree
choosing the most beautiful branch
for the bird
paint also the green foliage and the coolness
of the beasts of the grass in the summer's heat
and then, wait that the bird starts singing
If the bird doesn't sing
it's a bad sign
it means that the picture is wrong
but if it sings it's a good sign
it means that you can sign
so you tear with sweetness
a feather from the bird
and write your name in a corner of the painting.

PAGE D’ÉCRITURE
Jacques Prévert
Two and two make four
Four and four make eight
Eight and eight make sixteen…
Repeat! says the teacher
Two and two make four
Four and four make eight
Eight and eight make sixteen…
But there is the songbird
Passing by in the sky!
The child sees it…
The child hears it…
The child calls it:
Save me
Play with me, bird!
So the bird comes down
And plays with the child.
Two and two four…
Repeat! says the teacher
And the child plays and
The bird plays with him.
Four and four make eight
Eight and eight make sixteen
And what do sixteen and sixteen make?
They don’t make anything, sixteen and sixteen
And especially not thirty-two
Anyway
And they go away.
And the child has now hidden the bird
In his desk
And all the children
Hear his song
And all the children
Hear the music.
And eight and eight also go away
And four and four and two and two
Also leave
And one and one make neither one nor two.
One and one go away too.
And the song bird plays
And the child sings
And the teacher yells:
When will you stop acting like fools!
But all the other children
Listen to the music
And the walls of the classroom
Slowly crumble.
And the windows become sand again.
The ink becomes water again
The desks become trees again
The chalk becomes a cliff again
The inkwell again becomes a bird.
Here it is in French:
PAGE D’ÉCRITURE
Jacques Prévert
Deux et deux quatre
Quatre et quatre huit
Huit et huit font seize…
Répétez! dit le maître
Deux et deux quatre
Quatre et quatre huit
Huit et huit font seize…
Mais voilà l’oiseau-lyre
Qui passe dans le ciel!
L’enfant le voit…
L’enfant l’entend…
L’enfant l’appelle:
Sauve-moi
Joue avec moi, oiseau!
Alors l’oiseau descend
L’encre redevient eau
Les pupitres redeviennent arbres
La craie redevient falaise
Le porte-plume redevient oiseau.
