Mon Dieu m'a dit: Mon fils, il faut m'aimer. Tu vois

SON, THOU MUST LOVE ME! SEE—" MY SAVIOUR SAID

"Son, thou must love me! See—" my Saviour said,
"My heart that glows and bleeds, my wounded side,
My hurt feet that the Magdalene, wet-eyed,
Clasps kneeling, and my tortured arms outspread

"To bear thy sins. Look on the cross, stained red!
The nails, the sponge, that, all, thy soul shall guide
To love on earth where flesh thrones in its pride,
My Body and Blood alone, thy Wine and Bread.

"Have I not loved thee even unto death,
O brother mine, son in the Holy Ghost?
Have I not suffered, as was writ I must,

"And with thine agony sobbed out my breath?
Hath not thy nightly sweat bedewed my brow,
O lamentable friend that seek'st me now?"

Verlaine_by_Cazals_(Il_pleure_dans_mon_coeur)

മരനിഴലുകളാവി പോലലിയുന്നു;

യാത്രികാ, നീ വിളർക്കുന്നതും;

The nightingale that, high on a branch, views itself below, thinks itself lost in the river. It is perched in the oak tree’s crown and yet fears death by drowning.’

Cyrano de Bergerac

The shadow of trees on the mist-drenched river

Dissolves like vapour

While in air, among the true branches flown

The turtledoves moan.

How this pale land, oh traveller, too

Pale yourself, mirrors you,

And your drowned hopes how sadly they weep

High in the sighing leaves!

പച്ചയും ചുവപ്പും നിറത്തിൽ കണ്ണുമുരുട്ടിക്കടന്നുപോകുന്ന ബസ്സുകൾ;
വഴുക്കുന്ന പാതകൾ, തകർന്ന തറക്കല്ലുകൾ, പൊട്ടിയൊലിക്കുന്ന ഓടകൾ;

The din of the taverns, the slime of the streets,
the scrawny trees shedding their leaves in the sooty air.
The omnibus, a groaning storm of iron and mud,
    lurching between its wheels,
slowly rolling its green and red eyes.
The workmen headed for the wine shops,
puffing their pipes in the nostrils of the gendarmes.
    Dripping rooftops, oozing walls,
    crumbling pavements, overflowing gutters.
That is the road I walk – with heaven at the end.

Antoine_Watteau_063

Et ta douceur à me martyriser,
-- Mon Ange!

Serenade

Like the voice of a dead body that might
Sing from the depth of its grave,
Mistress, listen to my voice, harsh and out of tune,
Rising up to your refuge.

Open your soul and your ear to the sound
Of the mandolin:
For you, for you, have I made this song,
Cruel and wheedling.

I will sing of your gold and onyx eyes,
Pure of all shadows,
Then of the Lethe of your breast, then the Styx
Of your dark hair.

Like the voice of a dead body that might
Sing from the depth of its grave,
Mistress, listen to my voice, harsh and out of tune,
Rising up to your refuge.

Then I shall laud highly, as necessary,
This blessed body
Whose opulent perfume comes back to me
On sleepless nights.

And to finish, I shall sing of the kiss
Of your red lips,
And your sweetness in making a martyr of me,
My angel, my gouge!

Open your soul and your ear to the sound
Of the mandolin:
For you, for you, have I made this song,
Cruel and wheedling.

500px-GM_Crespi-Musée_Bx-Arts-Strasbourg_(2)-Pandurina

പ്രദീപ്തമാക്കുന്നതവളുടെ ആനന്ദമെന്ന്;

ഒരു ധന്യസൂര്യനാട്ടിപ്പായിച്ചുവെന്ന്;

ഇത്രകാലമതു പേടിച്ചുമിണ്ടാതിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു;

Fly, song

Fly, song, wing your way to her
and tell her that in my faithful heart
a joyous ray shines forth and day is come!

Do you hear how gaiety, so long silent
and afraid, sings
like a lark
in the clear sky?

Fly, innocent song!
There are no vain regrets,
and she is welcome
after her long absence.

Mueller_PairOfLovers1919

Green

Toute sonore encore de vos derniers baisers ;

Green

Here are the fruits, the flowers, the leaves, the wands,

Here my heart that beats only for your sighs.

Shatter them not with your snow-white hands,

Let my poor gifts be pleasing to your eyes.

I come to you, still covered with dew, you see,

Dew that the dawn wind froze here on my face.

Let my weariness lie down at your feet,

And dream of the dear moments that shed grace.

Let my head loll here on your young breast

Still ringing with your last kisses blessed,

Allow this departure of the great tempest,

And let me sleep now, a little, while you rest.

486px-Robert_Walker_Macbeth_The_nightingale's_song

En sourdine

Calmes dans le demi-jour
Que les branches hautes font,
Pénétrons bien notre amour
De ce silence profond.

[Fondons]1 nos âmes, nos cœurs
Et nos sens extasiés,
Parmi les vagues langueurs
Des pins et des arbousiers.

Ferme tes yeux à demi,
Croise tes bras sur ton sein,
Et de ton cœur endormi
Chasse à jamais tout dessein.

Laissons-nous persuader
Au souffle berceur et doux
Qui vient, à tes pieds, rider
Les ondes des gazons roux.

Et quand, solennel, le soir
Des chênes noirs tombera
Voix de notre désespoir,
Le rossignol chantera.

In Muted Tone

BY PAUL VERLAINE

TRANSLATED BY NORMAN R. SHAPIRO

Gently, let us steep our love

In the silence deep, as thus,

Branches arching high above

Twine their shadows over us.

Let us blend our souls as one,

Hearts’ and senses’ ecstasies,

Evergreen, in unison

With the pines’ vague lethargies.

Dim your eyes and, heart at rest,

Freed from all futile endeavor,

Arms crossed on your slumbering breast,

Banish vain desire forever.

Let us yield then, you and I,

To the waftings, calm and sweet,

As their breeze-blown lullaby

Sways the gold grass at your feet.

And, when night begins to fall

From the black oaks, darkening,

In the nightingale’s soft call

Our despair will, solemn, sing.

colloque

Colloque Sentimental

--------------------------------------

Colloque Sentimental [English]
Paul Verlaine
In the deserted park, silent and vast,
Erewhile two shadowy glimmering figures passed.

Their lips were colorless, and dead their eyes;
Their words were scarce more audible than sighs.

In the deserted park, silent and vast,
Two spectres conjured up the buried past.

“Our ancient ecstasy, do you recall?”
“Why, pray, should I remember it at all?”

“Does still your heart at mention of me glow?
Do still you see my soul in slumber?” “No!”

“Ah, blessed, blissful days when our lips met!
You loved me so!” “Quite likely,—I forget.”

“How sweet was hope, the sky how blue and fair!”
“The sky grew black, the hope became despair.”

Thus walked they ’mid the frozen weeds, these dead,
And Night alone o’erheard the things they said.

462px-William-Adolphe_Bouguereau_(1825-1905)_-_Drawing_Of_A_Woman_(Unknown)

My Familiar Dream

(Poèmes Saturniens: Mélancholia VI)

I often have this dream, strange, penetrating,

Of a woman, unknown, whom I love, who loves me,

And who’s never, each time, the same exactly,

Nor, exactly, different: and knows me, is loving.

Oh how she knows me, and my heart, growing

Clear for her alone, is no longer a problem,

For her alone: she alone understands, then,

How to cool the sweat of my brow with her weeping.

Is she dark, blonde, or auburn? – I’ve no idea.

Her name? I remember it’s vibrant and dear,

As those of the loved that life has exiled.

Her eyes are the same as a statue’s eyes,

And in her voice, distant, serious, mild,

The tone of dear voices, those that have died.

ആ കൊച്ചുതോപ്പിലൂടലസമായി ഞാൻ നടന്നു;

Rien n'a changé.

After Three Years
Having pushed open the narrow wobbling gate,
I strolled around in the little garden
Gently illuminated by the morning sun
Spangling each flower with a damp flash of light.

The simple arbor: it’s all still here, nothing’s different,
The madly-growing vines, the chairs of cane…
Always making its silver murmur, the fountain,
And the old aspen its perpetual lament.

Just as before, the roses throb; as before,
the huge proud lilies waver in the air.
I know every lark, coming and going.

I’ve even found the statue of the barbarian prophetess
Still upright down the walk, her plaster spalling
—Slender, amid the mignonette’s insipidities.

KG04-Savitri

Nevermore

Souvenir, souvenir, que me veux-tu? L’automne

Nevermore

translated by Ashmore Wingate (1904)

MEMORY, why bring me thither? Now the fear
Of Autumn drives the thrush through the wan sky,
The sun shines with a sad monotony
On yellowing woods where the north wind blows drear,
While we two walk with but each other near,
And thoughts with locks seem to be blown by.
Sudden she bends on mine a kindling eye;
Her voice of living gold so rich and clear,
Fresh as an angel's, asks, "which was most sweet
Of all your days?" For words, I smile discreet,
Kiss her white hand to show that it is dear.
Ah! how the earliest flowers give sweetest scent,
Ah! how deliciously it haunts the ear,
The first "Yes" that from well-loved lips there went.

verlaine

ജീവിതവുമായി പൊരിഞ്ഞ യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തു ജയിക്കുക;

Beauty of women, their frailty, and those pale hands

Which often do good yet can bring all suffering.

And those eyes where of the creature nothing

Is left but enough to say enough to man’s demands.

And forever, the maternal sleeper’s call,

Even when it lies, that voice! The dawn

Cry, when soft vespers are sung, signal new-born

Or sweet sob that dies in the folds of a shawl! ...

Harshness of man! Vile leaden life here below!

Ah! Let something at least, far from kisses and blows,

Let something survive for a moment on the slope,

Something the childlike subtle heart contains,

Goodness, respect! For dying what can we hope

To take with us, and truly, what when death comes remains?

Turner_-_Fort_Vimieux

ഭദ്രാസനപ്പള്ളികളാകാശത്തു തുളച്ചുകയറ്റുന്ന മണിമേടകളെ;

ഒരു പരേതനെയുമാദരിക്കാനല്ലാതെ;

വിശ്വസ്തതയുടെ വിഷാദഗാനം;

(1893)
