reclining-woman-at-the-seashore-1920.jpg!Blog_thumb[2]

What he said

Her arms have the beauty

of a gently moving bamboo.

Her large eyes are full of peace.

She is faraway,

her place not easy to reach.

My heart is frantic

with haste,

a plowman with a single plow

on land all wet

and ready for seed.

ഞങ്ങളതു കേട്ടിരുന്നു;

You came at night
when everyone was sleeping,
like a mighty bull elephant,
and tried to open our night door.

It’s not that we did not hear it.
We heard it, lord!

We were like fine peacocks
that were caught in a net
with their head-crests crushed
and tail feathers ruined,
since our mother without justice
held us tight whenever we stirred.

My mother and your mother,
what are they to each other?
My father and your father,

Like rainwater that falls and

loving hearts have become one.

only that man

If he lies, what can I do?

With little green legs like millet stalks,

a heron searched for eels in the running water

when he took me.

When love is ripe beyond bearing
and goes to seed,
men will ride even palmyra stems
as if they were horses;
will wear on their heads
the reeking cones of the erukkam bud
as if they were flowers;
will draw to themselves
the laughter of the streets;
and will do worse.

index

Kurunthokai 2, Iraiyanār, Kurinji Thinai – What the hero said about his lover’s beauty
O beautiful winged bee
whose life is choosing honey!
Tell me what you found
and not what pleases me!

Is there a flower with more
fragrance than the hair of
my woman with perfect teeth,
peacock nature and enduring love?

Notes:    This is the only poem that this poet wrote. In this song, the karu elements are the bee and the flower.  Uri is the love feeling of the hero.  The word ‘thumpi‘ is used for a bee that lives drinking honey.  It has also been used for dragonfly in other Kurunthokai poems (211, 239 and 392).

pg20a

വീട്ടുപടിക്കലവൻ വന്നുവെന്നേ;

What the heroine said to her friend

Listen my friend donning bright bangles!
That wild brat who used to kick our little sand
houses on the street with his leg, pull flower
strands from our hair, and yank striped balls
from us causing agony, came one day when
mother and I were at home.

“O, people of this house!  Please give me some
water to drink,” he said.  Mother said to me,
“Pour water in the thick gold vessel, and give it
to him to drink, my daughter with bright jewels.”
And so I went unaware that it was him.

He seized my bangled wrist and squeezed it,
shocking me.  “Mother, see what he has done,”
I shouted.
My distressed mother came running with a shriek
and I said to her “He had hiccups drinking water.”
Mother stroked his back gently, and asked him to
drink slowly.

He looked at me through the corners of his eyes,
smiled greatly, and gave me killer looks, that thief!

"I remember, around 12 years ago, my mother rushing into my room, all excited about a translation of a poem from the Kalithogai (one of the Sangam anthologies) that she had just read. Interestingly, it was not one of Shri. A.K. Ramanujam's famous translations (which are responsible in no small measure in granting Sangam poetry international recognition), to which I was introduced only later. The poem was a revelation to me, though I had had a brief taste of Sangam poetry in School. The poem was about a moment of transition between childhood and adolescence in a young girl. The images virtually came leaping off the pages at me. It seemed to have been written expressly for dance! My fascination for these poems began that day and the enchantment has only grown stronger over the years.”
